Plumes, the flowers of grasses

Ornamental grasses have become a wonderful addition to the landscapes here in Nebraska's hot, dry weather. Grasses push out their plumes starting in summer and into the fall.  These seed-heads are the "flower" of the grass world.  They come in several varieties with different shapes and colors.  These plumes can be a nice winter interest, but can also over seed pretty heavily depending on the variety.   The tighter and sturdier the grass stalk the better it holds over winter.  If the winter show or lack there of, is not something you desire it is perfectly acceptable to cut them back in late fall with your other perennials.   Whether you cut them back early or come spring,  be sure to enjoy the soft plumes in all their splendor!
